GOLF COURSE RESTORATION

Classic design in golf...

Restoring classic architectural or art pieces is a complicated process that involves having a great appreciation of the original and the thoughts and skills of the creator.

Given the quality of golf courses that were designed in an era long preceding technical computer software or large-scale earth moving equipment, the works and talents of these designers should be given the same level of distinction as a piece of fine art or sculpture.

The men and their masterpieces...

The many courses designed in the classic periods of golf course architecture were designed by such worthies as James Braid, Alister Mackenzie, Donald Ross, A.W. Tillinghast, to name but a few, with many regarded as lasting memorials to the styles and talents of the men behind them.

Many of these current layouts can bare little or no resemblance to the original designs of possibly 80 or 100 years ago, and this should be of no surprise given the changes to nearly all aspects of the game in that time.

Back to the future...

Course restoration allows golf clubs to reinstate classic design features and styles lost over time to many factors including long standing design and maintenance changes. This is a process of combining analysis of historical information with the working knowledge of the architect involved in the original design to provide design solutions and advice.

Many changes to golf courses are not to the benefit of the original design but this process of reinstatement allows advancements in the game, such as technology, to be taken into account.

These services can be targeted at specific aspects of the golf course such as bunkering or green design, or can be used to undertake a complete overhaul of a layout.
