GULLANE BAY GOLF LINKS

Project Overview...

Finding an undeveloped area of coastal links that provides the natural terrain and play conditions that have remained the most desirable throughout the evolution of the game is a dream come true. This site provided all that and more, it is rough and wild, exposed to the elements and epitomises the natural golf environment. The most important factor in the development of this design was an understanding of the landscape sensitivity and in particular the complex processes that formed it.

Site Information...

Gullane Bay Site

In this environment, sand is the primary building material and is blown from the beach onto the land where it gathers in a series of waves to form the area we know as linksland. Given that sand accumulation may be as small as 20cm per year, vertically, it follows that a commonly sized dune of 10-12m could take 50 years to form, and shows that great care must be taken when introducing golf holes to an environment where maintaining existing landforms and providing a platform for future landscape evolution is far more important.
