Girvan Golf Club

Golf Course Road, Girvan, Ayrshire , Scotland, KA26 9HW

Project Overview...

Located 5 miles from the world famous Turnberry Resort, Girvan Golf Course has all the charm of good wee course living in the shadow of a legendry links. That said, it has its problems but therein lies the challenge of the job. The brief for the project was simple, replace the 5 holes south of the river (land was to be used for housing), re-route the remaining holes, and overall, improve the layout of the course. This last bit, improve the layout of the course, may seem fairly obvious but to understand this you have to understand the make-up of the course.

The course encountered is no surprise given its chequered history. A James Braid design, utilised for crop growing during the war, reinstated thereafter, extended inland at a later date, 8 links holes, 10 parkland holes, some very good – some not so good, but the perfect challenge to try and pull it all together.

Site Information...

Luckily the layout of the site lends itself to being pulled together. To strengthen any layout it is always possible to add length which will strengthen the card, to add features and hazards to enhance individual holes but to really strengthen this layout the objective becomes to try and amalgamate the two distinct styles. The 8 links holes could not be more definitive links and same goes for the parkland. Fortunately the holes that will be utilised for housing, the finishing holes, are the poorest part of the course. Loosing these weak holes means only 5 parkland holes remain and these 5 could be modified to make the step from links to parkland less dramatic.

The 5 new holes become the real link(s). Creating a complete loop of 18 when you take away the 14th tee – the furthest away point from the clubhouse – calls for the new holes to better balance the layout as well as the overall style. A new first hole sets the scene for the round followed by the 8 links holes. After 2 further new holes you are returned to the clubhouse before playing the redeveloped parkland section with a final new hole completing the round.

This configuration of links, modified parkland, and newly created holes was designed to unite the disjointed nature of the existing setup. This was further enhanced by adopting a single bunker style throughout and by making 2 of the 6 parkland holes par 3’s this style is emphasised to the greatest effect. The completed configuration makes the clubhouse a central hub which is important for the blend of members and visitors that make use of the facility.
